The Groups Mission:

  • To foster the success of highly differentiated pork value chains that are profitable to all participants, that incorporate farmer ownership and control, and that contribute to environmental stewardship and rural vitality.

What We Do:

  • Funding for the PNMWG and its projects currently comes from the Value Chain Partnerships for Sustainable Agriculture project, the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, the Iowa Pork Producers Association, the National Research Initiative of the USDA's Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service, and the Iowa Attorney General's Innovative Swine Industry Enhancement Grant Program.
  • The PNMWG provides a forum for groups and individuals interested in niche pork to come together, exchange information, and strategize ways of working together to address the key challenges facing niche pork supply chains. The PNMWG also uses funding from various sources to support projects aimed at addressing these challenges.
  • Oversight of PNMWG activities is provided by a steering committee. Steering committee members include the Leopold Center, Practical Farmers of Iowa, Iowa State University Extension, Iowa Pork Producers Association, Iowa Institute for Cooperatives, USDA Rural Development and the Iowa Pork Industry Center.
  • Funding for the PNMWG currently comes from the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, the Iowa Pork Producers Association, the Iowa Institute for Cooperatives, the Value Chain Partnerships for Sustainable Agriculture project, and a grant from the USDA Value Added Development Grant program.

About the Group:

  • Established in January 2002, the PNMWG was the first working group of the VCPSA project.
  • It has a part-time coordinator and works with more than 30 organizations and agencies.
  • It serves as a forum for groups and individuals to come together, exchange information and strategize about ways to address challenges facing niche pork supply chains.
  • It sponsors research and development projects aimed at addressing the challenges facing niche pork supply chains.
  • The working group publishes a newsletter four times a year, Pork Niche News.
  • It also publishes reports of PNMWG-sponsored research and development projects.
  • Oversight is provided by a steering committee with representatives from the Leopold Center, Practical Farmers of Iowa, Iowa State University Extension, Iowa Pork Producers Association, Iowa Institute for Cooperatives, USDA Rural Development, and the Iowa Pork Industry Center.
